And I’ve done this quite practically. I created a local CBO—Community Based Organization—in my hometown, and I mobilized the young people. I used my local church to mobilize young people 15 to 30, and boys and girls. So these are university students. Some of them are already graduates, and we all teamed up.
We have a common goal, which is to make an impact in our community and make our community a better place. So I all started that by myself—living a purposeful life and reaching out to people that I think will carry the values that I carry. And I’m glad that they were able to buy into my ideas. And together, we teamed up, and now they’re able to discover their potentials, what they’re able to do with their lives, and the kind of positive impact they can do in their respective communities.
But also, my value as an individual is to work with utmost integrity and accountability, so that my impact is felt in the hearts of those that would understand it. So the moment you portray yourself as a role model, as an example, there are people who will always line up for the good cause. And it would actually not take much from them to come and support you.
I witnessed this practically. It happened to me—that when I came up with this idea of the CBO that I told you, it was very, very easy for me to mobilize a lot of people behind me. And without fundings from any agencies, we are able to raise money from our local activities and be able to feature on big radio stations, big televisions, and big community events—because of some of these values that we carried together.
So for me, respect and integrity and accountability is very important—especially when you’re doing community work—because there’s a lot of questions and a lot of expectations that you need to be able to fulfill. And for you to be able to influence people, you must also have had a clear background of understanding about yourself, about the things you do, and then you have respect for other people. And that’s how you will gain the following and support from the community
