Unlock Your True Purpose: Wisdom and Practices for a Fulfilling Life
In our fast-paced world, many find themselves searching for meaning beyond the daily grind. What does it truly mean to live with purpose? How can we align our passions and skills to make a meaningful impact?
In this episode of Awaken Your Purpose, Gopi Kallayil — an AI strategist at Google and mindfulness advocate — joins Zenka Caro to explore methods, stories, and philosophies that help uncover your true calling.
What Is Purpose?
For Gopi, purpose operates on two levels:
- Professional purpose: Using your skills and training to improve lives and reduce suffering
- Personal and spiritual purpose: Achieving self-realization, connecting with universal consciousness, and helping others do the same
Purpose isn't merely about what you do — it's about how you do it and the impact you leave on others.
Practical Steps to Discover Your Purpose
1. The Ikigai Method
Derived from Japanese philosophy, Ikigai lies at the intersection of four key areas: what you love, what you're good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for. This framework becomes a lens to continuously refine and align your actions with your inner calling.
2. Reflecting on Flow States
Identifying moments of "flow" — when time seems to disappear — can reveal your passions. Write down stories of when you felt completely immersed in an activity. Patterns will emerge that guide you to your purpose.
3. Ask Yourself Big Questions
Take a blank sheet of paper and answer: If resources and failure were no concern, what would you do with your life? What activities make you lose track of time? Even if the answers are unclear at first, repeated reflection will help clarify your true calling.
4. Meditative Practices
Meditation and time in nature are powerful tools for introspection. Walk slowly in nature, take in your surroundings, and ask yourself: What is my purpose? The answer will emerge — not as a booming voice, but as a gentle whisper.
The Struggle and Joy of Purpose
Finding and living your purpose isn't without hurdles. Often, we're conditioned to chase societal markers of success — money, titles, possessions — only to realize they're unfulfilling. Pivoting from these constructs to a higher purpose can be challenging but rewarding.
What Would a Purposeful World Look Like?
According to Gopi, if most people lived with purpose:
- Collaboration over competition — people would prioritize collective well-being
- Less violence — frustration and hopelessness would diminish as individuals find fulfillment
- Environmental harmony — with a shared sense of interconnectedness, humanity would focus on solving global challenges together
